A conversation with David Joy
On September 26th, we had the opportunity to meet an author that came straight from America ! His name is David Joy and we have met him because he is related to one of the themes we are studying : Voyages Territoires frontières. We discussed passages we had studied in class from “Those we thought we knew”, 2023.
Afterwards we asked him a lot of questions related to his lifestyle, his hometown, life in the Appalachians, his opinion about American schools and loads more ! And every response given was always enriching for our vocabulary but especially for our knowledge. We have learned that this author is an Appalachian (within America that represents 10% of the population) and he has to hunt in the mountains to get some food ! That was interesting to listen to since in France there is not a population who usually hunts. Then David Joy told us that when he crossed the Rhône he asked : « What kind of fish do we catch in here ?» Because he was probably thinking of hunting one for his dinner !
Thank you for reading my piece but we are even more thankful that David Joy came ! It was a wonderful experience !
